Monday's with Ev

My grandson Ev starts kindergarten in a couple of weeks. Since COVID, Mondays have been our special time together. We've both grown from our shared experience.
Early on, Ev opened my eyes to what I had been missing. I grew younger as he grew older. For example, we visited the library for Storytime, and rode our scooters to the park. At the playground, he practiced counting with each swing cycle as his voice rose with each arc through the air.
We love to build things together. We have built towers with Magna Blocks and cities with Legos. Lately, he’s exploring Minecraft on his iPad. I’m learning about the dream world he’s creating.
Ev asks a lot of questions. How does an airplane fly? What is a germ? Some I could answer, some I couldn’t –and some we explored together. When his sister went to the hospital for surgery, we read Curious George Goes to the Hospital, and Ev asked if the doctors would be kind to his sister. It helped him feel less afraid.
As Ev prepares for kindergarten, I realize he’s taught me as much as I’ve taught him. Through his eyes, the world is new again—and I’m grateful to see it with him.
Mondays with Ev have reminded me that curiosity, play, and presence are powerful teachers. As leaders, parents, and grandparents, we often think we’re the ones guiding—but sometimes, the youngest among us show the way.
To seeing through open eyes,
