If you don't set goals, you can't regret reaching them. - attributed to John Maxwell

What value is securing more resources for your mission?

Begin by setting measurable goals.

Measurable goals are specific objectives that you set to track its progress and impact. Your goals include clear targets and quantifiable outcomes, making it easier to evaluate success.

Key Characteristics of Measurable Goals

  • Limited Number - 3 to 5 measurable goals that grow mission impact.

  • Specific – Clearly define each goal’s positive impact.

  • Quantifiable – Include metrics or numbers that indicate success.

  • Achievable – Set realistic targets based on available resources.

  • Time-bound – Establish a deadline for achieving each goal.

Examples of Measurable Goals

Instead of a broad goal like “increase community engagement,” successful nonprofits set measurable goals such as:

  • Fundraising: Raise $100,000 for the fall event to support programs

  • Volunteer Growth: Recruit and train 100 new volunteers in the next six months

  • Outreach Impact: Provide meals to 1,500 families each month

  • Educational Programs: Enroll 300 students in free career-skills workshops during the next 12 months

Why is it important for leaders to track each goal regularly?

Monitoring the goals of each team allows leadership to track progress and make necessary adjustments. It ensures team leaders remain accountable for their responsibilities and staying on schedule. Each goal dedicates resources to achieve the mission.

When a team reaches its goal, celebrate. Your team is growing mission impact. Their accomplishment boosts morale and motivation overall.

Report the goal's impact. Sharing the impact of measurable goals with champions and the community highlights the organization's achievements and contributions.

Champions assess your organization’s impact relative to other organizations before making a significant contribution. Their goal is to maximize the effectiveness of their resources. Providing a comprehensive impact report with quantifiable results enhances your chances of securing their support.
