Nonprofits connect diverse groups of people to a common cause. After tornadoes blew apart homes in Birmingham, AL, Habitat for Humanity paired my church team with Jews, Muslims and atheists to rebuild homes. Working together, we put our differences aside for the common good to build homes for families that lost theirs.

Nonprofits provide a safe place for people from diverse groups to come together to support a common cause. Where else would you find faith based, civic, business organizations, and Individuals from the community working together to heal our fractured world?

“We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men.” -Herman Melville

Groups connect with a nonprofit for different reasons but each contributes to mission impact. I appreciate my friend Scott Marier for pointing this out.

Faith Communities emphasize charity, compassion, and helping those in need.

Civic Organizations focus on improving our local community.

Businesses care about return on their investment. Businesses that sign up for the Corporate Social Responsibility model commit to act in a socially responsible way; improving Profit, People & Planet.

Individuals want purpose in their life, to contribute to the mission, and be part of a community.

Your nonprofit is ripe to engage champions. Consider each group's focus when you invite them to contribute. Engage champions within your community.

Here’s to building connections,
