Comfort Is Easy - Leadership Is Not

“The hidden danger of leadership isn’t failure. It’s comfort” — Patrick Lencioni

Near the end of my father’s time leading The Eldred Company, he settled into a routine of comfort. The hard conversations he once embraced were avoided. Difficult decisions were postponed. And while his intentions were good, the company began to struggle—not because of a lack of skill, but because comfort had replaced courage.

Leadership is the unseen force that nourishes every part of your organization’s tree—from the roots of mission, vision, and values, through the soil of culture, up through the core systems that support growth, and out to the branches and leaves that extend to the community partnerships.

Ultimately, it is courageous leadership that allows us to harvest fruit—the outcomes of our mission—and plant seeds for lasting impact.

Leadership is not about comfort

It’s about having hard conversations.

It’s about making difficult decisions. It’s about cultivating trust.

It’s about building resilient teams.

It’s about staying rooted in purpose.

Comfort is tempting but courage grows mission impact.

Where is comfort holding us back?

What courageous conversations are needed that we have been avoiding?

How can we better nourish our culture to support growth?

Moving forward, continue to lead with courage—nourishing our mission so it can grow, thrive, and bear fruit for the community we serve.

To leading with courage,
